Job Interviews: Traditional Questions are Still the Tradition

By Carla Vaughan Job interviews can be so frightening. They may even be worse on the nerves than public speaking, which is also a huge fear for most people. How can a person overcome some of the fears of interviewing? The most important thing you can do to feel more comfortable in a job interview setting is to prepare for the situation. Being prepared for an interview is essential not only for your success in finding a great job, but also in keeping your nervous system from going crazy. When you are able to answer many of the expected questions asked in a job interview, you will be far more confident and successful. Here are some questions to help you prepare for your next job interview. Either recite your answers, write them down or both. Go over them until you feel you can answer them without hesitation. Why did you leave your last job? Why should I hire you? What are your strongest abilities? How do your skills relate to our needs? How would a good friend describe you? Describe the best job you’ve ever had. What would your last boss say about your work performance? Name two things that you would like to accomplish while working here. What makes you qualified for this position? What are you looking for? Would you accept part time or temporary work? Are you willing to work overtime? What would you like to know about our firm? Tell me something about yourself? What are your greatest strengths/weaknesses? Where do you want to be in 5 years? Why do you want to work for us? What motivates you to go the extra mile on a project or job? What kinds of people do you enjoy working with? What kinds of people frustrate you? Do you consider yourself a leader? What do you see yourself doing five years from now? Ten years from now? What are your long range career objectives? How do you plan to achieve your career goals? Why did you choose this career? Have you ever had difficulty with a supervisor? How did you resolve the conflict? What have you learned from your activities? Were your extracurricular activities worth the time you put into them? What interests you about our company? How long would it take for you to make a meaningful contribution? How does this assignment fit into your overall career plan? Are you willing to submit to a background check? What concerns you about our company? Describe the most rewarding experience of your career thus far. If you were hiring a job-seeker for this position, what qualities would you look for? Do you have plans for continued study? An advanced degree? Are you willing to do whatever it takes to be successful in this job? In what kind of work environment are you most comfortable? How do you work under pressure? What’s one of the hardest decisions you’ve ever had to make? How well do you adapt to new situations? How many hours per week do you expect to work? What can you do for us that someone else can’t? What are your expectations regarding promotions and salary increases? What criteria are you using to evaluate the company for which you hope to work? Are you willing to relocate? How do you deal with competition? If a background check were performed on you, what would it show? What are some things you would like to avoid in a job? Why? What are some of the things about your last job that you found difficult to do? Do you have your reference list with you? How has your present job developed you to take on even greater responsibilities? What do you have going for you that might make you successful in such a job? Would you like my job? What do you do when people disagree with your ideas? What plan of action do you take when facing a problem? What is the most boring job you have ever done? Yes, that is a long list of questions. Of course, you do not need to have an answer for every single one, but the more prepared you are, the better you will do. Also, as you answer some questions, it becomes easier to answer others, so you will gain a lot from going through the list and tackling as many questions as possible. Interviewing is never going to be easy, but it can be EASIER if you are well prepared. By Christopher Byrnes Homeschooling is slowly becoming a trend nowadays and most parents are having fun with the interaction they are having with their child. Some parents are still having second thoughts regarding homeschooling though. Their main concern is that they might be having some problems finding resources to use for homeschooling. This article will help you find resources from different places. The first stop is a ride to your nearest bookstores. Armed with a list of possible books to buy from a curriculum of a school, you can buy the books at any convenient bookstore. This will save you a lot of time and give you flexibility with regards to your child’s studies as bookstores have more choices and references for your child to use. An alternative stop would be a trip to your closest magazine stores. Magazines provide you a lot of catalogs where you can choose from a lot of advertisers listed in it. This will help you from spending lots of time searching through bookstores and will give you a sense of what your child’s going to get. Of course, with all the technology available on the internet, you should not be really surprised that you can find websites offering help in your child’s studies. Some of them can be easily found when searching at Google and some of them can be given to you by other people who are also having their child homeschooled. The simplest place to look for resources is by going to a public library. Public libraries have books and references for you child to take home and use. To help with that, libraries have different instructional materials such as videos (like those from National Geographic) and cassette tapes (like tapes that will help you learn another language). These instructional materials not only help with the books in teaching but they also help in easing out the boring quality and the monotony ofbooks given out to children. Libraries also offer a lot of computer software which will not only help with your child’s learning but will also help him in understanding different computer technologies and how they work. Often computer software is easy and fun to use, therefore attracting a lot of young people to use it. Libraries also give book discussions. Book discussions not only train your child to read but also to think and criticize every thing that he/she reads. This will not only develop reading comprehension, it will also help your child in critical thinking. Another place to look at is at the house of another parent who decided to homeschool their children. You might find it interesting that they are willing to share both their experiences and their used materials (books, references and other activity materials). You could save a lot of money and at the same time learn from these people who have already experienced the joys and the pains of homeschooling a child. The most neglected place and probably one of the most informational, next only to a library, is the museum. A trip to a museum will not only help your child appreciate art and history but your child will also learn a lot from observing and listening to the history of all the museum displays. The best way to conduct this is by joining a group museum tour where there will be an instructor to guide and give you bits of information that will help your child. The last place, but definitely not the least in this list, is inside your home. Search your cupboard and teach your child some simple baking lessons. This will not only help your relationship with your child but it will also promote your child to learn patience and of course will teach your child how to bake. You could also do outdoor activities such as planting seeds. This will help your child be interested in plant life but if coupled with other activities (such as mathematics), this has a potential to be both fun and instructional. Fatal Flaws- How to Have a Happy Relationship and Keep Your Values Intact

By Frankie Picasso If you are knee deep in trying to find a relationship, maintain or sustain a relationship then you need to think seriously about your Fatal Flaws. Not your own mind you, but those that are demonstrated by that really cute guy/girl you are considering getting into bed with, literally and figuratively. Fatal Flaws are the deal breakers for you. They are traits that given a cool head and some common sense, you would say to yourself and anyone else who might listen, there is no way I could ever be with someone who does this! Sometimes, you can be alerted to these Fatal Flaws, with your early warning system - Red Flags, but once the Pheromones and Endorphins have been released, and youve started to fall into never never land, those Fatal Flaws dont seem quite so important anymore. Wait a minute Coach Frankie, if we know this, what can we do to stop it? Well my friend, thats what is coming next, but first, a little lesson in science called know thyself! I want you to take a reality check right now, and I want you to promise that for the next 10 minutes you will think with cool reason instead of with the heat of passion. Right now you are an objective observer of human behavior, a sociologist in Relationship Land. As scientists, (remember this from Grade 9) we need to state a hypothesis. Well our Hypothesis states that A leopard cant change his spots, people for the most part do not change their core behavior Their modus operendi so to speak. So given this as our hypothesis, I want you to make a table of columns and write down on one side- behaviors that you do not want your mate to demonstrate EVER, and on the other side, the traits that you are looking for in your dream mate Fatal flaws Dream Mate Lying Always tells the truth Cheating Believes in fidelity Coach potatoe Exercises daily I think you get the idea. When you first meet someone, they may seem perfect at first blush, but it is important to look for the signs on their landscape that will tell you a bit about your future with them. Really listen when they speak. Do they make derogatory comments about other races? Is this something you can live with or not? For me, this would be a fatal flaw. Do they smoke? Unfortunately, this would be a fatal flaw for me as well, unless they were prepared to quit immediately. I dont want the heartache of falling for someone who smokes knowing that I cant stand it. Remember I said to know thyself? Well I know that I would always be on their back to quit and would turn into an unpleasant nag. That is not who I want to be in a relationship and I am sure that this is not an image that you would want to project either. How do you stop it? Learn to know yourself and your own behaviors. Once you have finished filling in your table, post it somewhere close by and be true to it. You dont need someone so badly that you have to compromise your values to have them. I KNOW YOU DONT!!! No one does. Be true to yourself. Know in advance what you are willing to compromise on, and what you are not. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate! I cannot stress this enough. When the first red flag appears- ASK your friend about it. It may be a misunderstanding and it may not. If it is not a misunderstanding, then bail out,do it quickly and cleanly. This is for your own good. In the end, you will save yourself months of torment and anguish. When it comes to relationships, it is ok to be selfish. I dont mean that you should be selfish in a relationship, but I do mean you should be selfish (remember that wish list we just completed) while searching for one. Does Your Employer Even Care?

By Ken Lizotte At first glance it seems like a remarkably positive statistic. In a study on employee loyalty conducted by the Walker Information Global network and Hudson Institute, exactly half of nearly 10,000 employees surveyed agreed that their organization is interested in developing people for the long term and not just ones current job. Of course, this does seem quite significant in light of the huge Loyalty is Dead movement so omnipresent the last 10-15 years. Consider: employees standing up for their employers, believing in them because they had shown a propensity to believe in them. Astonishing, a kind of miracle. But I couldnt help wondering what about the other poor souls stuck in the other 50% block. Just the way life is? Bad luck, tough roll of the die? Traditional business model, to be assumed and taken for granted? Even if true, the other 50% still sheds a poor light on the moral behavior, not to mention savvy, of too many of todays employers. The guiding light of the 80s and 90s seems to have been Chew em up, use em up, spit em out. Though these new figures may now suggest that such insensitive, supra-pragmatic mindsets may not be as pervasive as we had thought, half of all employers out there nonetheless apparently do not care one whit what happens to even its most dedicated workers. Small wonder the survey could only earmark a third of all the American employees it studied as truly loyal to their organization. This percentage ranked on a worldwide scale below such relatively undeveloped countries as Colombia, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia and Mexico. No, American companies are not required to exercise moral obligations to its workers in the form of long term career development, though given the day-in, day-out toil and commitment generated by those workers, one might attempt to mount a reasonable argument to the contrary. Add the fact that it can be very, very difficult to look for another job when one’s entire workday is consumed at one particular locale, i.e., the employee has effectively locked him/herself up, offering the employer a form of de facto loyalty. Shouldnt the employer be obligated to some of form of loyalty in return? In terms of pragmatism, here we have persons learning and honing not only the particulars of a job but the overall mission and objectives of the entire organization. Employees also create, build, cement customer relationships on an ongoing basis, keeping the connection with the employers lifeblood alive and healthy. How does it make sense to throw such persons out, or not seek out ways to keep them growing in the organization and getting better at what they do, i.e., grooming them for other valuable internal functions? The surveys results thus couldve read, less optimistically, this way: 50% of employees today agree that their organization is NOT AT ALL interested in developing people for the long term, only for their current job. That would be a demoralizing way to phrase it but an accurate one just the same. Individual managers in such organizations can of course change this by taking it upon themselves to develop their own subordinates, regardless of company polices or culture. Financial Definitions; F thru K

By Roger Sorensen The ever increasing number of investment products and financial services in the marketplace today can be confusing. We have put together this glossary of financial definitions designed to help you understand some of the more common investment and financial terms you may encounter. Your financial advisor can explain these terms more completely and discuss with you those which are relevant to your situation. Face Value - The value of a bond that appears on the face of the bond, unless the value is otherwise specified by the issuing company. Face value is ordinarily the amount the issuing company promises to pay at maturity. Face value is not an indication of market value. Sometimes referred to as par value. Financial Futures - Futures contracts based on financial instruments such as U.S. Treasury bonds, CDs and other interest-sensitive issues, currencies and stock market indicators. Fiscal Year - A corporation’s accounting year. Due to the nature of their particular business, some companies do not use the calendar year for their bookkeeping. A typical example is the department store that finds December 31 too early a date to close its books after the Christmas rush. For that reason many stores wind up their accounting year January 31. Their fiscal year, therefore, runs from February 1 of one year through January 31 of the next. The fiscal year of other companies may run from July 1 through the following June 30. Most companies, though, operate on a calendar year basis. Fixed Charges - A company’s fixed expenses, such as bond interest, which it has agreed to pay whether or not earned, and which are deducted from income before earnings on equity capital are computed. Flat Income Bond - This term means that the price at which a bond is traded includes consideration for all unpaid accruals of interest. Bonds that are in default of interest or principal are traded flat. Income bonds that pay interest only to the extent earned are usually traded flat. All other bonds are usually dealt in “and interest,” which means that the buyer pays to the seller the market price plus interest accrued since the last payment date. Floor - The huge trading area - about the size of a football field - where stocks, bonds and options are bought and sold on the New York Stock Exchange. Floor Broker - A member of the Stock Exchange who executes orders on the floor of the Exchange to buy or sell any listed securities. Formula Investing - An investment technique. One formula calls for the shifting of funds from common shares to preferred shares or bonds as a selected market indicator rises above a certain predetermined point - and the return of funds to common share investments as the market average declines. Free and Open Market - A market in which supply and demand are freely expressed in terms of price. Contrasts with a controlled market in which supply, demand and price may all be regulated. Fundamental Research - Analysis of industries and companies based on such factors as sales, assets, earnings, products or services, markets and management. As applied to the economy, fundamental research includes consideration of gross national product, interest rates, unemployment, inventories, savings, etc. Funded Debt - Usually interest-bearing bonds or debentures of a company. Could include long-term bank loans. Does not include short-term loans, preferred or common stock. Futures - Exchange traded contracts specifying a future date of delivery or receipt of a certain amount of a specific tangible or intangible product. The commodities traded in futures markets include stock index futures, agricultural products like wheat, soybeans and pork bellies; metals; and financial instruments. Futures are used by business as a hedge against unfavorable price changes, and by speculators who hope to profit from such changes. General Mortgage Bond - A bond that is secured by a blanket mortgage on the company’s property but may be outranked by one or more other mortgages. Gilt-Edged - High-grade bond issued by a company that has demonstrated its ability to earn a comfortable profit over a period of years and pay its bondholders their interest without interruption. Give-Up - A term with many different meanings. For one, a member of the Exchange on the floor may act for a second member by executing an order for him or her with a third member. The first member tells the third member that he or she is acting on behalf of the second member and “gives up” the second member’s name rather than his or her own. Gold Fix - The setting of the price of gold by dealers (especially in a twice daily London meeting at the central bank); the fix is the fundamental worldwide price for setting prices of gold bullion and gold-related contracts and products. Good Delivery - Certain basic qualifications must be met before a security sold on the Exchange may be delivered. The security must be in proper form to comply with the contract of sale and to transfer title to the purchaser. Good ‘Til Canceled (GTC) or Open Order - An order to buy or sell that remains in effect until it is either executed or canceled. Government Bonds - Obligations of the U.S. Government, regarded as the highest-grade securities issues. Growth Stock - Stock of a company with a record of growth in earnings at a relatively rapid rate. Hedging - The purchase or sale of a derivative security (such as options or futures) in order to reduce or neutralize all or some portion of the risk of holding another security. Holding Company - A Corporation that owns the securities of another, in most cases with voting control. Hypothecation - The pledging of securities as collateral - for example, to secure the debit balance in a margin account. Income Bond - Generally income bonds promise to repay principal but to pay interest only when earned. In some cases unpaid interest on an income bond may accumulate as a claim against the corporation when the bond becomes due. An income bond may also be issued in lieu of preferred stock. Indenture - A written agreement under which bonds and debentures are issued, setting forth maturity date, interest rate, and other terms. Index - A statistical yardstick expressed in terms of percentages of a base year or years. For instance, the NYSE Composite Index of all NYSE common stocks is based on 1965 as 50. An index is not an average. Institutional Investor - An organization whose primary purpose is to invest its own assets or those held in trust by it for others. Includes pension funds, investment companies, insurance companies, universities and banks. Interest - Payments borrowers pay lenders for the use of their money. A Corporation pays interest on its bonds to its bondholders. Interrogation Device - A computer terminal that provides market information - last sale price, quotes, volume, etc. - on a screen or paper tape. Intrinsic Value - The dollar amount of the difference between the exercise price of an option and the current cash value of the underlying security. Intrinsic value and time value are the two components of an option premium, or price. Investment - The use of money for the purpose of making more money, to gain income or increase capital, or both. Investment Banker - Also known as an underwriter. The “middleman” between the corporation issuing new securities and the public. The usual practice is for one or more investment bankers to buy outright from a corporation a new issue of stocks or bonds. The group forms a syndicate to sell the securities to individuals and institutions. Investment bankers also distribute very large blocks of stocks or bonds - perhaps held by an estate. Investment Company - A Company or trust that uses its capital to invest in other companies. There are two principal types: the closed-end and the open-end or mutual fund. Shares in closed-end investment companies, some of which are listed on the New York Stock Exchange, are readily transferable in the open market and are bought and sold like other shares. Capitalization of these companies remains the same unless action is taken to change, which is seldom. Open-end funds sell their own shares to investors, stand ready to buy back their old shares, and are not listed. Open-end funds are so called because their capitalization is not fixed; they issue more shares as people want them. Investment Counsel - One whose principal business consists of acting as investment adviser and rendering investment supervisory services. IRA - Individual Retirement Account. A pension plan with tax advantages. IRA permits investment through intermediaries like mutual funds, insurance companies and banks or directly in stocks and bonds through stockbrokers. Issue - Any of a company’s securities, or the act of distributing such securities. Keogh Plan - Tax advantaged personal retirement program that can be established by a self-employed individual. By Elizabeth Gilley People are always reminded to refrain from consuming too much sodas and softdrinks because they contain lots of sugar and can cause tooth decay. But never because they contain benzene. Benzene is a byproduct and chemical present in the atmosphere where there is presence of concentrated chemical pollutants. Benzene presence in softdrinks had been confirmed by a team of doctors in a research facility in Australia. This now posed a new barrage of health and medical concerns and debates. A spokesperson from the FSANZ (Australia’s food board) confirmed benzene presence of the said substance and proceeded to outline and allay the health and medical fears the results posed. According to the FSANZ, benzene is formed when the ascorbic acid in the beverage reacts with the food additives used for the soda. However, the resulting benzene is very low and at negligible amounts. The agency also eliminated the risk of poisoning and health problems that could be caused by benzene presence. FSANZ asserted that a person would have to consume over 20 liters of softdrink to reach the amount taken in from polluted air. But they also emphasized that benzene, in any form, is undesirable in food and drinks. The agency also assured the public that they are indeed working with softdrink manufacturers to further reduce the amount of possible benzene formation. Despite the assurance of the FSANZ, a toxic specialist, Kathy Hughes expressed disappointment over the response of the FSANZ. According to her, it does not matter whether the benzene concentration is negligible or not, but the fact that it is in there and it is significant enough to be detected, should alert health and medical professionals. It is also imperative that consumption of softdrinks found with benzene should be stopped or else limited to adults since benzene can stunt the growth of the mental and physical faculties of children. She also stressed the significance of the surprising result of the combination of two relatively harmless substances: additives and ascorbic acid. She asserted that if two harmless and common substances used in food preparation resulted in a toxin, there could be much worse amounts in products that used the substances in higher concentrations. She called on to the FSANZ to reinforce more stringent measures not only on the finished products, but also on the substances used to make them. This is important to detect and stop possible toxin formation. Lastly, perhaps it is better to limit intake of processed foods and beverages to ensure that less chemicals enter and pollute the body systems. Food safety should be a top priority for consumers and manufacturers alike. It is also wise to act on anything that raise health and medical problems immediately to avoid further complications. Web Review Of Victorian Canna Hybrids

By Patrick Malcolm Great progress began in 1870 in the hybridizing of the canna lily by a combination of genetic materials from the wild canna species that had been collected from around the world, leading to the production of the ‘Madame Crozy’ cultivar. A great interest developed in canna lilies as a colorful garden plant that previously had been grown chiefly for the fast growing, tropical foliage, since the wild canna blooms were mostly small and uninteresting. The stockpile of collected, canna wild species were again used to back-cross and intermingle with the celebrated hybrid, Madame Crozy. The bright bazaar colors and the tropical look was excitable and exotic for the gardeners of the Victorian Age. Several countries including Italy, Germany, France, and England became actively involved in canna hybridization. Great efforts were made to codify the canna lily as an inexpensive, brilliantly flowered plant with the tropical, fast growing, garden choice to plant everywhere, and as often happens, to the unstoppable point of being brashly overdone. A few of the Victorian Era canna hybrids are still grown today, despite the general opinion of most canna lovers, that they should be buried with the past and forgotten except for the historical contribution that elevated the wild native hybridization canna combinations that created new directions for color and tropical leaf development to explore. The naming of the Grand Opera Series of Canna lilies, was, a flower hybridizer’s colorful idea of associating an Italian classical musical treasure- The Opera—with a group of hybrid flowers. These new canna hybrids, likewise, caused a sensation in the garden lovers world, and the possibility of the commercial production of canna rhizomes made it possible for gardening Italians to reasonably afford to plant the brightly colored tropical leaved plants in their yards. The brilliant idea of associating the beloved Operatic titles with colorful tropical leaves with stalks of glowing flowers worked well. These Italian canna introductions were planted and grown throughout much of the European continent. The Grand Opera Series of canna cultivars were tagged with names of the well known operatic performances of Aida, La Boheme, La Traviata, Madam Butterfly, Rigolletto and Der Rosenkavalier (German.) The German Canna hybridizer, Wilheim Pfitzer, had his own favorite canna names including, Stadt Fellbach. Most of Pfitzer named cannas were given vivid and specific color names such as: Crimson Beauty, Primrose Yellow, Salmon Pink, and Chinese Coral. In addition to adding clear colors of pastels, the Pfitzer canna grew into dwarf plants and rarely grew taller than 3ft. This dwarf feature was very attractive for small metropolitan gardens, where space was limited, and most of the Pfitzer canna cultivars readily produced seed that might grow into even better canna cultivars with that personal touch for the backyard gardener. Italian interest in hybridizing canna lilies extended even into the Italian Monarchy reigns of King Emmanuel II and his son, King Humbert. The Yellow King Humbert canna is believed to have been renamed by an English gardener as Richard Wallace. The noted French Hybridizer in 1870, Luther Burbank, the famous American Botanist, noted in his book, Flowers, published in 1921 that the Madame Crozy canna introduction laid the foundation for a canna hybrid industry to rapidly evolve, since the flowers were colorful and large and all existing flowers of known wild canna species had produced small insignificant flowers. All interest in growing canna as a garden subject had previously come from an eclectic interest in the exotic tropical leaves, not from the flowers. Luther Burbank imported the Madame Crozy canna into California, where he back-crossed it with Canna flaccida, an American S.E. Wild native canna, that grew in the salt marshlands of Georgia. That improvement named the ‘Tarrytown’, that resulted as a back-cross of the Canna flaccida on the Madame Crozy cultivar won a prize at the Buffalo, NY Flower Award. That excellent canna cultivar dropped its older flowers as they matured, leaving the cluster of blooms looking fresh and vibrant. Luther Burbank went on to develop several white flowered canna hybrids and another bi-color named for himself, “Burbank.” Burbank’s prizewinner, Tarrytown was distributed through a mailorder seeds man, J.C. Vaughan from Chicago, Il. and renamed as, ‘ Florence Vaughan; the wife of J.C. Vaughan. The Florence Vaughan canna is an excellent cultivar, lemon yellow with creamy-orange splotches and dots, still sold by many mailorder catalogs today and can be found flourishing in moist ditches where it has become naturalized in many locations of the South. Other Victorian type canna cultivars that still exist and are listed in mailorder catalogs are: Rosemund Cole, a bi-color, orange and yellow green -:leaved canna; Black Knight also sold as Ambassador, a deep crimson flower, a sparse bloomer; City of Portland, small pink flowers atop 6ft ratty leaves of green; and firebird, as orange-red small flowered orphan that has been expelled from most home gardens.
